FAQs

  • How big is the TTI Tower?

    • The tower is 1000 feet tall from the ground to the highest point on the tower. The candelabra at the top is 105 feet wide from corner to corner.  The “spires” on each corner are 100 feet tall.  It is a very complex structure and requires highly specialized crews, tools, materials and expertise to safely and effectively prepare and paint the tower.

  • Who developed the construction plan?

    • A team of industry experts and professionals have been assembled and developed a comprehensive construction plan to perform the work needed to safely and effectively paint the tower.  These trades include:

      • Structural engineering for design and structural analysis

      • Industrial hygienist, accredited by MDE, for inspection and sampling

      • Environmental, health and safety management group, accredited by MDE, to develop the lead health protection plan.

      • Environmental remediation, accredited by MDE, for cleanup of work materials.

      • Construction consultants with experience in large construction projects and tower painting projects, similar to this project.

      • Tower rigging and painting crew, accredited by MDE and experienced working on this and hundreds of other tall broadcast towers.

      • Paint manufacturer, several high-performance 2-part coatings were tested and evaluated, and a final selection made, based on ASTM industry standards.

  • How long will it take to paint the tower?

    • Painting will continue through the summer and likely into the fall. Inclement weather has a major impact in work being performed, coupled with the complexity of the tower, it may take longer.

  • What hours will the work take place?

    • Workers may be working from 7 AM until 6 PM.

  • What days will the crew work?

    • Typically, the crew will work Monday-Saturday.  The crews may work on Sundays to make up for days they cannot work due to inclement weather.

  • Will there be any traffic disruptions?

    • The work is not expected to disrupt traffic.

  • Will there be any loud noises created?

    • There will not be any significant noise generated during the work.  Forklifts and other equipment will be used on the tower property, which do not generate any significant noise.

  • What is the procedure to paint the tower?

    • The tower will have several custom designed and fabricated containment systems attached around small work areas of the tower. This containment is intended to contain paint chips and new coatings inside a limited work area. Due to the altitude and complexity of the structure, 100% containment is not feasible. After the system is in place, the existing surface will be prepared according to MDE regulations. Then, a series of three coatings (a two-part epoxy spot primer, a full-coat two-part epoxy primer and a two-part epoxy topcoat) will be applied to all surfaces inside the work area. Then the containment structure or materials will be moved to the next area to repeat this procedure until the work is complete. Note, work on the tower may change locations due to wind and weather considerations.

  • What happens when paint chips escape the containment area?

    • Crews will be inspecting the work area and the surrounding area daily. If chips are found, they will be cleaned up and disposed of by MDE accredited crews and disposed of according to the appropriate rules, regulations and laws.

  • What if I find paint chips on my property or in public places?

    • Please use our contact page to contact TTI. An inspector and cleanup crew will be dispatched as soon as their schedule allows.
